Lecale Conservation Association recognised Tyrella beach, County Down, as one of the top 5 visitor beaches in Northern Ireland. As a result, footfall on the beaches led to extensive erosion of the dunes and thus the coast’s natural defences against storms and extreme weather. In addition, freshwater ponds within the dunes system  were home to Northern Ireland’s largest population of Irish Newt and Lizard!

After receiving funding from the Department of Infrastructure’s “Living Places and Spaces” fund, Lecale Conservation Trust set to work on managing access, educating and engaging the public, and regenerating the dunes system. Read more about each phase of the project below:
