27 March, 2026
The Beaches and Dunes Forum is pleased to report a successful first of the two 4th Annual Sand Dune Gatherings, which took place at Ulster University Coleraine and Portstewart Strand, Co. Derry on 6th of March, 2026.

The Gathering featured presentations from community representatives and coastal practitioners, sharing on-the-ground experience from across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Speakers include representatives from Fanad Community Group, Machaire Beo / LIFE on Machair, and Newry, Mourne and Down District Councils.
The presentations were followed by a panel discussion with a lively question and answer session, which provided space to reflect on common challenges, practical solutions, and lessons learned from community-led dune restoration and engagement initiatives.
Arriving at Portstewart Strand

In the afternoon, the Gathering went out to Portstewart Strand for a series of field based activities along the beach and dune system. Leave No Trace led an activity on the impacts and lifetime of litter the Forum led an activity on sand dune building and destruction through environmental and human impacts, and National Trust discussed dune management through invasive species removal as well as how archaeological evidence in the dune system can tell a story about the first people in Ireland.

The Gathering was fantastic opportunity for everyone with an interest in Irish beaches and sand dunes to share innovative ideas, practical experience and best practice in preserving these vital ecosystems. The day created space to learn from one another, strengthen connections, and build momentum for the future of Ireland’s coasts.
We look forward to the 5th Annual Sand Dune Gathering, set to be held in March 2027 in Dublin. We will see you there!
