Tramore Eco Group’s Catherine Twomey shares insights into their ongoing dune restoration work
The lazy, hazy crazy days of summer are well and truly upon Tramore, and the recently-expanded resident population is augmented by holidaymakers and daytrippers from Waterford city, the hinterland of the South East, and beyond! It’s great to see so many people benefitting from the sea air and sunshine.
The Tramore Eco Group have engaged a considerable number by distributing information leaflets about their incredible dune restoration work which is ongoing. This has been very well received by the vast majority of the people they have spoken to.
That said, some revellers decided to turn a section of the dunes into party central at the end of May. Signs were torn down, fencing trampled, and litter scattered over a wide area. Dispiriting, after all of the groups efforts during the winter together with Waterford City & County Council and workers from the National Parks & Wildlife Service, to install a significant amount of chestnut fencing in areas of the dunes that were identified as most vulnerable to erosion.

Tramore Eco Group are engaged in restoring the restoration work, and they’re determined to keep doing so while continuing to get the message out that their amazing dunes are not only a Special Area of Conservation, but they also protect the town from flooding! Well done to all involved in this incredible work.
